For gardeners in recent years, many additional opportunities have opened, with which you can diversify the usual methods and methods of growing traditional crops. That strawberry or strawberry is no exception. First came remontant varieties, which allowed to feast on delicious and healthy berries almost throughout the year. And then suddenly began to advertise the so-called curly strawberries, pictures of which struck the imagination of even experienced gardeners. But there are no climbing varieties of strawberries - quite another thing - an ampel strawberry, which is only a popular variety of strawberry remontant. It is the care of an ampel strawberry that is the subject of this article.

Ampelnaya strawberry - what does it mean

There are varieties of strawberries that can not only form quite a lot of long whiskers, but also form on them flowering and fruiting rosettes even without contact with the soil. These sockets, in turn, also give a mustache with sockets.

Attention! The most curious thing is that these varieties begin to form a mustache even before the appearance of the first flower stalks.

Due to this, by the time when the first berries begin to ripen on the mother plant, the first buds can already form on the daughter sockets.

If these varieties are planted in a high pot or hanging pots and hang all the shoots down, then you will get an excellent type of ampelous strawberry. In general, the word "ampel" is translated from German, as - hanging vase. Therefore, ampelous strawberry is more a method of growing and forming plants than a certain type of strawberry.

It is exactly remontant strawberry varieties that are most often used as ampelous ones, since they make it possible to extend the period of fruiting from late spring until autumn. All this time, flowerpots or baskets with ampelous strawberries will be able to decorate your site.

Most often, this strawberry is used for growing at home, on balconies or terraces. Sometimes they even sacrifice fruiting for the sake of decorativeness - because if strawberries do not cut off extra mustaches, then the mother bushes will not cope with such a load and will not be able to make blooming and give berries absolutely all emerging sockets. But the lush cascade of greenery provided in any case.

Growing from seed

If you are thinking about how to grow a large quantity of ampelous strawberry seedlings at once for yourself or for sale, then you can recall the method of growing it from seeds. This method allows for a short time to get a lot of good healthy seedlings that can give berries in the current season, subject to early sowing. In addition, when breeding with a mustache for a long time, there is a danger of accumulating viral diseases in the bushes, and in most cases they are not transmitted through the seeds.

Important! It should be remembered that it is impossible to take seeds from berries belonging to bushes of strawberry hybrids, since grown plants may not at all retain maternal attributes.

If you buy seeds in the sales network, you should not forget that strawberry seeds remain viable for a very short time. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to sow them in the year of purchase, otherwise germination may fall several times.

Sowing seeds of ampelous strawberries should be carried out in January, or at least in February.

Properly selected substrate is very important for the cultivation of strawberries seeds. It should be very light and breathable, because the seeds of the berries are small and in no case can not be deepened into the ground. They germinate only on the surface in the light.

Usually they use special peaty soil, which is well mixed with fine coconut fiber. Over poured a thin layer of calcined river sand. Sometimes when sowing strawberry seeds, use the following technique - the surface of the soil for sowing is covered with a small layer of snow, the seeds are carefully laid out on top. When the snow melts, it will pull in the seeds, and they will be both moist and pressed to the soil.

Top crops covered with film or glass and put in a bright warm place (about + 25 ° C). Crops must be ventilated daily by cleaning glass or film for 5-10 minutes. Seeds can begin to germinate after 7 days, but sometimes some linger up to 15-20 days. After germination, the capacity of the crops is placed in the most lighted place, where the length of daylight hours is at least 12 hours a day.

Seedlings continue to be ventilated daily, but the shelter is finally removed only when the first two true leaves are opened on the seedlings of strawberries.

Watering the seedlings is very moderate from a syringe or using a pipette, since excessive soil moistening can lead to an outbreak of the disease blackleg.

Attention! It is desirable that the temperature at which the seedlings are contained after the emergence of shoots is 6-8 degrees lower, that is, about + 18 ° C.

Pickling of seedlings of ampelous strawberries is usually carried out a month after the emergence of shoots, planting them in separate small containers. By this time, the seedlings should have at least three true leaves, but its size is still small. A picking will help accelerate the development of plants, so that in May they can be planted without any fear in open ground conditions.

Before planting in the soil, strawberry seedlings are fed several more times with complex mineral fertilizer or diluted manure with the addition of wood ash.

If strawberry seeds for seedlings are planted in January, then in May the first buds and flowers can be observed.

Planting strawberry strawberries

Since strawberry strawberries are most often grown in special containers or in pots, it is necessary to take special care of the composition of the land mixture in which it will grow. Typically, peat, humus, leaf and sod land are used in equal proportions with the addition of river sand. It will be reasonable to add some hydrogel to the substrate. This is a special substance, which absorbs water during irrigation, swells, and then, if necessary, is able to give excess moisture to the roots of plants. Since on hot days in any container, the ground will dry out quickly, the presence of the hydrogel will help the strawberry bushes to experience occasional interruptions in irrigation.

At the bottom of the basket or container in which it is supposed to grow strawberries, pour a fairly thick layer of drainage - it can be expanded clay, pebbles or pieces of charcoal. The planting of ampelous strawberries is carried out in such a way that from 1.5 to 3 liters of nutritious soil fall on each bush. It is impossible to deepen bushes, especially with regard to the middle of the bush, the so-called growth point, which must be located on the surface of the substrate.

Care features

Planting and caring for an ampelous strawberry have some peculiarities, but they are primarily related to the conditions of growth and the formation of bushes. Attention is drawn to the following:

  • Watering strawberry bushes should be especially verified, you should not allow neither drying, nor over-wetting of the earthy clod. The best option would be to use when planting a hydrogel. You can also use drip irrigation systems and pots with built-in humidity control.
  • Due to the repair quality of ampel varieties, strawberry bushes need constant and regular feeding during the entire vegetative season. After all, to feed such an abundance of mustache and rosettes, the plants need enhanced nutrition.

Tip! For top dressing of ampelous strawberry growing indoors, use complex mineral fertilizers, and for open ground it is better to use different organic matter.

If the cultivation of ampelous strawberries is mainly for you to harvest the berries, and not the decorativeness of the plants, then the main care procedure should be to remove excess whiskers and sockets. The plant is able to feed no more than two outlets on a whisker, all the rest should be removed as they appear. The total number of whiskers should also not be too large. Usually leave no more than five of the first mustache, but you can experiment with dressings and observe the development of your bushes. Ultimately, much depends on the characteristics of a particular variety.

Often gardeners are interested in how to properly store ampelous strawberries in the winter.

  • The most reliable way is to move the bushes in the fall from the containers to the beds, dropping them in the ground and mulching with fallen leaves or straw. You can prikopat bushes in the ground with containers, if they allow it.
  • In the southern regions, it is possible to simply warm the vertical structures with straw mats or dense white non-woven material so as not to get sunburn.
  • And in those regions where a lot of snow falls, it is enough to disassemble the vertical structures and place them on the ground. Usually they winter well under a snow cover.
  • It is also possible to transfer pots with ampelous varieties for the winter in the cellar, it is only necessary to take into account that strawberries are ideally preserved in winter at temperatures from -5 ° C to + 3 ° C. At higher temperatures, the spread of fungal diseases is possible.

In the spring, strawberry bushes can again be planted in pots and containers, removing faded and dry leaves and taking care of them in the same way as ordinary garden strawberries.

Conclusion

The harvest of ampelous strawberries depends on the variety, but in any case, having planted this miracle in your plot, you will admire a cascade of flowers and fruits all summer and enjoy the aroma and taste of juicy berries.
