One of the main crops grown in our gardens is onions. We eat it all year round and use it almost daily. It is easy to grow onions, but in order to get a good harvest without attention it cannot be left. This root crop has its own specific diseases and is affected by pests. If you do not recognize them in time and do not take action, the turnip will grow small, and will not be stored for long.

Onions take out little fertilizer from the soil, its agronorm is only 19. Many owners ignore top dressing, do not fight pests, arguing that they want to get an environmentally friendly product, and then they are surprised at the scarcity of the crop. We do not advocate the thoughtless use of chemistry in unlimited quantities, but we note that neither the laws of nature, nor agricultural technology has not been canceled. Feeding onion with liquid ammonia does not lead to accumulation of nitrates, besides it protects it from pests. How to use it will tell this article.

Fertilizer with ammonia onion

Ammonia is a clear liquid with a strong pungent odor, which is ammonium hydroxide dissolved in water. In fact, it is a nitrogenous fertilizer, easily and quickly absorbed by plants, when used in reasonable doses does not lead to the accumulation of nitrates. Ammonia does not act on all cultures the same way, for example, seedlings absorb it almost completely, and on strawberries it almost does not act.

Onions are one of those plants that assimilate ammonia nitrogen well. Using different dosages, you can use a solution of ammonia for root and foliar dressings.

Ammonia in pest control

Applying ammonia, we not only feed onions, but also fight with its main pests. Insects can not stand the smell of ammonia, even in minimal concentration.

To scare away an onion fly, it is enough to water between the rows between the rows of ammonia prepared from 10 liters of water and 1 tablespoon of ammonia every week in June-July.

The hidden trunkfish, which is the most dangerous pest of onions, requires two-time watering of the plantings - the first time at the beginning of shooting, the second - 2 weeks later. To do this, 25 ml of ammonia dissolve 10 liters of water.

Onion fertilizer with ammonia

It is considered that it is impossible to overfeed a plant with ammonia solution, besides its overdose does not lead to accumulation of nitrates. But ammonia is a caustic compound, it can simply burn a turnip or feathers at high concentrations. Excess nitrogen fertilizer always leads to negative consequences - the development of green mass to the detriment of the growth of the bulbs, contributes to the development of putrefactive bacteria and reduces shelf life.

When you need ammonia

First of all, ammonia is used for fertilizer of onions, when it is necessary to urgently add nitrogen - foliar dressing is not for nothing called fast. Usually we take the white tips of the leaves of garlic and onions as nitrogen starvation. In fact, there may be several reasons and they should be distinguished:

  • If only the tips of the leaves are white, the feathers are even and of a normal green color, then the bow lacks copper. Here ammonia does not help - you need to shed inter-row copper-containing drug.
  • The feather not only turned white on the top, but also slightly twisted - lack of potassium. You can use any potassium fertilizer you like, even chlorine-containing one - onions and garlic tolerate it well.
  • White becomes the entire stem - frost. Here you need fertilizer nitrogen fertilizer, which can act as ammonia.
  • Onion feathers have acquired a yellowish or light green shade, and not just the white tips - the actual lack of nitrogen. An ambulance is needed here, not a single fertilizer can cope better and faster with liquid ammonia.

Of course, the white leaf tips can be a sign of acidic soil, but we hope that you did not make such an unforgivable mistake and deoxidized the soil before planting the turnip. If not, add calcium nitrate, dolomite flour or lime. But this will only help to cope with excess acidity, and onions require weakly alkaline soils. Pour a bed of wood ash, preparing a solution at the rate of 2 cups per bucket of water.

Preparation of ammonia working solution

In order not to burn with caustic ammonia either the leaves or the onion turnip, it is important to prepare the solution correctly. We give recipes for its preparation, hoping that you are using a 25% pharmacy drug.

Attention! The maximum allowable concentration of ammonia for feeding plants, including onions - 1 tablespoon per liter of water.
  • For watering at the root of 3 tbsp. l ammonia dissolve 10 liters of water.
  • For spraying take 5 tbsp. l ammonia to 10 liters of water.

The meaning of spraying is to keep the active ingredient on the feathers of the bow as long as possible. To this end, a sticky agent is added to the working solution, which is sold in any store or mall that sells fertilizers. But to buy it is not necessary, everything that is needed for its preparation is at our fingertips.

  • Add to the ammonia mixture for spraying liquid or previously dissolved laundry soap.
  • If you grow onions on a feather, you should not use soap. Add to the bucket of water 2 tbsp. l dry mustard.
  • You can use the cheapest flea shampoo for dogs as a sticky liquid for ammonia solution, but only if you do not eat greens.
Important! The unnaturally dark glossy foliage of an onion indicates that you have overdone it with nitrogen fertilizer - stop it immediately.

Fertilizer and treatment rules

Ammonia is a volatile compound. If you process the onion with a sprayer, then simply do not deliver the working substance to the leaves in the right quantity. Water the plants from the watering can with ordinary holes (splashes should be visible, not too small).

Foliar treatment with liquid ammonia is performed in dry, calm weather early in the morning, at sunset, or in overcast weather. Pour water on the feathers of the bow, trying not to raise the watering can too high. If you have a large plantation and all the processing you do with a sprayer, switch it to spray (see the instructions, even the most primitive manual preparations have such a function).

Tip! To prevent a chemical burn with ammonia, you can spray onions with clean water after 30 minutes, but it is better not to exceed the concentration, and use the maximum only in emergency cases.

If you grow onions on a turnip, first pour it with a solution of ammonia under the root, then give 2-3 foliar treatments, and then just water it. When the feathers begin to dry out, stop the nitrogen supplements altogether.

Precautionary measures

As we noted above, ammonia is caustic. Of course, it is sold in pharmacies and is a drug, and cotton wool, moistened with a drop of ammonia, due to its strong smell can lead to feelings of an unconscious person. A drop! We are preparing fertilizer for onions, using this substance in fairly large quantities. Contact with skin, mucous membranes, or inhalation of ammonia vapors may result in serious consequences.

Just wear latex gloves and a regular respirator is not enough. You must remove the hair under a headdress, wear protective glasses, a plastic apron and a gas mask or a special respirator that allows you to work with caustic volatile substances. Remove others to a safe distance.

A warning! If you do not have the opportunity to equip in this way - refuse onion treatments with ammonia.

With all its safety after a short period of time, at the time of application, this volatile caustic compound can cause great harm to your body. With ammonia you need to be extremely careful.

Conclusion

Ammonia can be used as an ambulance for onions and garlic in the absence of nitrogen. It does not turn into nitrates even with an overdose, but it can burn the plant. Do not forget about the sense of measure and the rules of precaution - this will allow you to get environmentally friendly products at minimal cost. Have a good harvest!
