Like many other vegetables, cucumbers are often planted in the garden in the form of seedlings. Because of this, you can get a fresh harvest earlier, and the plants themselves will be better able to withstand stress.

Cucumber seedling develops faster and suffers less from pests and specific diseases. However, to achieve good results, you need to properly germinate the seeds at home. Further, you can see photos and video how-to for beginners.

How to choose seeds for planting

On sale are different types of seeds. They differ in processing method, and therefore their preparation for sowing will vary.

  1. Ordinary. Such seeds before planting need to be calibrated by hand. Immediately cast small and uneven. Seeds of the correct form are dipped in salt water: the good ones will sink to the bottom. The emerged shoots will not give and it is not worth taking them for seedlings. The next stage of treatment is washing the tested seeds with fresh water and drying.
  2. Calibrated. To germinate, such seeds necessarily require moisture and heat. First they are wrapped in wet gauze or cloth and left at about 30 degrees. As soon as the seed gave a spine, it is immediately planted in the soil.
  3. Processed. Such seeds are already prepared for sowing, they can be sown directly in open ground. On their surface are applied a very thin layer of bactericidal and antifungal drugs.
  4. Granular These seeds are also protected by special preparations. In addition, they are covered with a layer of nutrient that will improve the development of seedlings.

When choosing seeds for planting in 2019, it is also important to consider the purpose of the fruit. Hybrids produce a bountiful harvest, but their fruits cannot be used for harvesting seeds for the next season. For blanks, you can plant special pickling or universal varieties. For direct use on the seedlings choose salad varieties, and miniature fruits of cucumber gherkins can be collected daily.

How to choose the right soil

In order for seedlings to actively grow and develop in 2019, it needs suitable soil. It should be light and loose, so that oxygen and moisture come to the roots. The balance of the soil components is also important. No larvae, fungi, or other microorganisms that could damage plant growth should be present in the ground.

Important! The soil for seedlings should be of the composition of the soil in which it will be planted after germination.

To prepare the soil for seedlings in equal proportions, the following components are mixed:

  • sand;
  • peat;
  • humus;
  • turf soil.

All these ingredients need to be mixed thoroughly. To enrich the soil and saturate with nutrients, it is recommended to add a little sawdust, a glass of ash, a teaspoon of urea and as much nitrophoska (per 10 kg of soil).

Important! The mixture should be stored in a cool place.

Before planting the seeds in the soil, it must be disinfected. You can do it yourself with steaming. The soil is poured on the grid with small cells and hold for 30 minutes over boiling water. Then you need to let the ground cool down and spread it in containers for seedlings.

Also for the disinfection of the soil, you can use a solution of potassium permanganate (for concentration - the water should get a crimson color). Pour the soil with this mixture before sowing the seeds and wait for it to dry.

We choose the time for sowing seeds for seedlings

For sowing seeds for seedlings in 2019, it is important to choose the right time. If you do it late, the sprout will not have time to get stronger before landing in the ground. And if you sow the seeds too early, the plants will stop, stretch out and after planting will be less fruitful. It also happens that the seedlings overexposed at home simply do not take root in the ground. Therefore, it is important to monitor both the growth conditions of cucumbers and the timing.

Important! To make a strong seedling, sowing should be carried out 20-25 days before the planned movement into the ground.

You will need to prepare plastic cups or special peat containers. As seen in the photo and video, they are filled with earth, two germinated seeds are placed at a depth of about 3 cm. Then they are watered with warm water and covered with foil. When they germinate, the film is removed.

Sowing seeds in two is necessary to ensure the right number of shoots. When sprouts appear with unfolded cotyledon leaves, the weaker plant is removed. Otherwise, due to the struggle for sunlight and moisture, both sprouts will begin to weaken. In order not to damage the delicate roots of the second plant, gently pinch off the stem at ground level. The rest of the germ will decompose over time.

Seedlings must be planted in individual pots, as shown in the photo and video. Cucumber doesn’t like it when its roots are injured, and it is unlikely to be avoided during transplantation. Even if the plant and take root in the garden, later it will bear less fruit. Therefore, cucumber seedlings are always planted directly from the ground or in a biodegradable pot. To do this, buy peat tablets or independently make paper containers.

Care of sprouted seedlings

After germination, the seeds must be fed. For the procedure it is better to leave the morning time when it is clear on the street.

  1. When the first sheet opened, it's time to apply ammonium nitrate.
  2. After 14 days, you can use phosphorus-potassium fertilizer, it is diluted in a concentration of 50 g per 10 liters of water.
Important! After watering the leaves need to wash off the remnants of the nutrient composition.

Pots with just sown seeds should be kept at about 25 degrees. When the sprouts grow, the temperature should be lowered to 20 degrees. Otherwise, the seedlings will quickly go up, and then wilt.

A week before landing in the ground, the temperature should be lowered even more - to 18 degrees. Sprouts require "hardening". To do this, they are sometimes taken to the balcony, but you can not leave the seedlings in direct sunlight.

Cucumbers need sunlight. Take care of the lighting will have especially in cloudy weather. To accelerate the development of plants, use fluorescent lamps or special fitolampy. They are mounted above the seedlings at a distance of 5 cm. As the cucumbers grow, lamps raise. For home seedlings, one or two 40-80 watt lamps will be sufficient.

In cloudy weather, artificial lighting is required for sprouts throughout the day. And in sunny weather it is enough to turn on the lamps in the morning from 7 to 10 hours, and in the evening from 4 to 6 hours.

Is it possible to save pale seedlings

When growing seedlings with their own hands at home, it is not uncommon for the stalks to stretch out and the sprout itself to become pale. This happens if the light or temperature conditions for the plants are incorrectly chosen.

To seedlings properly developed, you need to lower the temperature and make the lighting more intense. For cucumbers in this case will be enough 15 degrees. For better illumination, containers with seedlings should be placed a little further from each other so that they do not block the light with others. On the windowsill it is worth installing mirrors on the side and on the top so that sunlight reflects on the shoots. If necessary, it is necessary to install fitolamps above the soil, which are shown in the photo and video.

Important! To help the sprouted seedlings, you need to reduce the temperature and increase the illumination.

Even if the stalks are too long, the seedlings can be planted on the garden bed on the plot. In order for it to take root well in a new place, the soil must be warm and moderately moist. There are two ways to plant a plant:

  • put in the ground deeper, right up to the cotyledon leaves;
  • sprinkle on top of loose, warm soil.

If in 2019 weak seedlings have to be planted in cold land, the soil around the plant should be covered with a perforated film of dark color. It does not prevent the evaporation of excess fluid and provides warming roots. Due to this, the part of the stem in the ground will add additional roots that will support weak seedlings. In due course it will get stronger and will form a full-fledged healthy bush.

How to be if the seedlings have blossomed

The cucumber seedlings very quickly begin to appear flowers. The video shows that plant buds can still be gathered on the windowsill. Strong seedlings will not suffer from this.

With weakened seedlings, the situation is different. Here it is better to remove the first flowers so that the plant has time to get stronger and form a full-fledged bush in the ground. It will begin to bear fruit a little later than its neighbors, but in terms of yield it will quickly catch up with them. If you leave the flowers in a weak seedling, in the end it can lose the ovary and give much less fruit.

Planting seedlings in the soil

In the video, the plants are not very tight - two or three sprouts per square meter of soil. Before planting seedlings in open ground or in the greenhouse you need to carry out preparatory work.

  1. Prepare the wells for seedlings.
  2. To moisturize the soil, although it is not necessary to get too carried away with watering, the marshy ground cucumbers will not work.
  3. Introduce top dressing.
  4. Sprinkle with soil.

Now you can start planting seedlings on the site. Turn the pot over and remove the entire contents with your hands. The plant is placed in the hole with a lump of soil. Then it is watered, and on top, as in the video, sprinkled with a small amount of dry soil. This procedure will prevent the formation of a crust at the landing site.

Important! When planting seedlings, the seed knee should not go into the hole in the soil.

What care does planted seedlings require?

In the garden, seedlings still require care. Cucumbers are very demanding of moisture. Although they need a lot of fluid, you should avoid excessive soil moisture. For watering seedlings use only warm water. The procedure should be carried out more frequently during the flowering and formation of ovaries. If you follow these rules, the fruit will not have a bitter taste.

In addition to watering, transplanted seedlings require systematic removal of weeds and the formation of bushes. To get oxygen to the roots, it is necessary to loosen the soil.

Growing your own cucumbers requires a lot of effort. However, by following the recommendations and training videos in 2019, a bountiful and tasty harvest can be obtained from seeds, which will please the whole family.
