Varieties of lilies: Asian, terry, undersized, tall, white

Gardeners who already have experience growing lilies in their plots know that these flowers, despite their luxurious beauty, are for the most part very unpretentious and require minimal maintenance. But the variety of lilies is large and not all of them can boast of such properties. At the glance of a beginner, flowers that are similar in appearance can vary greatly in their requirements for the place of growth, soil type and methods of reproduction. In the article you can get acquainted with the richness of the species and varietal composition of lilies, learn the features of each group, admire the photos of the most interesting and beautiful representatives of this genus.

The main international classification of lilies

At the end of the last century, the total number of varieties of lilies obtained from the crossing of various species and hybrids among themselves reached 10 thousand and increases every year by several hundred varieties. Since lilies are quite different in terms of the requirements for care and other characteristics, in the middle of the XX century a single international classification was adopted, which survived to our time with minor changes.

According to this classification, it is customary to distinguish the following 10 sections among lilies:

  1. Asian hybrids.
  2. Corny (Martagon).
  3. Snow White (Candidum).
  4. American (American).
  5. Longiflorum (Longiflorum).
  6. Tubular and Orleans (Trumpet and Aurelian).
  7. Oriental (Oriental).
  8. Interspecific hybrids (hybrids between varieties of the previous sections, named after the first letters of their Latin names, LA-, OT-, LO-, OA-).
  9. All wild species.
  10. Hybrids not included in previous sections.

Florists - people are creative and often come up with their own color classification. So often you can find the classification of lilies by flower coloring, by stem height, by flower structure (terry or not), by the presence or absence of flavor, by winter hardiness, by reproduction methods. All these features will be considered in the description of the groups and varieties of lilies below, with the obligatory names of varieties and photos.

Asian hybrids

It is from these hybrids that the breeding of new varieties began long ago, and at the moment it is the most numerous group. In the creation of varieties of this group, the largest number of natural species, mostly from Asia, came from (hence the name of the group). It includes more than 5 thousand varieties, and the variety of colors and simplicity to care for these plants have no equal among other lilies.

For the Asian hybrids are very tiny varieties, growing in height not more than 40 cm, and tall giants, up to 1.5 meters. Among them is the whole range of shades from white to black, with the exception of blue and blue.

Comment! The color of flowers is monophonic and two-three-color, as well as decorated with various strokes, dots, spots.

Flowers come in a wide variety of shapes, including terry. In size, they are not the largest among lilies - on average they reach 10-15 cm in diameter.

Flowering does not last very long - usually about two weeks. Flowers usually appear from early June to early to mid-August.

Asian hybrids can rightfully be called the most unpretentious varieties of lilies - they can be grown from the south to the most subarctic latitudes. Shelters for the winter in the conditions of the middle band they do not require, multiply in all possible ways, and about their diversity has already been said above.

The lilies of this group have absolutely no smell - for some it is a drawback, but for someone it is a great advantage.

Asian hybrids do not tolerate the presence of lime in the soil, they need soils with a neutral or slightly acid reaction. They can grow equally well in the sun and in light penumbra.

Among the best and most beautiful varieties of Asian lilies include:

Lion Heart

Coloring the flowers of this lily can be called avant-garde. On one plant can bloom up to 12 star-shaped flowers. It blooms in the second half of summer.

Thanks to Marlene Lily, rumors about the appearance of so-called pyramidal lilies appeared in the people, the varieties of which can form up to several hundred flowers on a single shrub. Sometimes they are also called spray lilies. All these names, to put it mildly, are incorrect, because, firstly, lilies almost always develop only one stem. Secondly, sometimes with some varieties, the phenomenon of fasciation occurs, that is, the splicing of several stems. As a result, the stem actually acquires a powerful form and many (up to several hundred) flowers can form on it. But this phenomenon is not programmed and does not depend on any particular factors. If you are lucky, you will be able to observe such a bloom in varieties of Marlyn, Aphrodite, Elijah, Red Hot and Fleur varieties.

I can not even believe that such a delicate flower can stand in a state of rest up to -25 ° C below zero frost. Blossoms within 70 days after germination. The inflorescences are not very large, include about 5-6 flowers.

Tribal Dance

Among the new varieties of lilies, this hybrid stands out for its unique color. It blooms in July and August, grows to 110 cm.

Low-growing lilies: varieties + photos

Among Asian hybrids, there are many undersized varieties that can be successfully grown in small pots on terraces, balconies and even in indoor conditions. All of them do not grow more than 50-60 cm, and many varieties reach only 40 cm.

These varieties of lilies are named by some unscrupulous sellers as the newest varieties of “pot” or potted lilies. In fact, many of them have been known for quite some time, and by planting several bulbs of different varieties in a pot, you can in a short time really get a luxurious bouquet of small multi-colored lilies.

That's just the flowering of this bouquet will last a relatively short time - no more than two weeks. If you want to enjoy flowering a little longer, about a month, then you can use for this purpose low-growing varieties of lilies from the group of eastern hybrids, which will be discussed a little lower.

Tip! If you see the words “Pixie” or “Taini” in the name of the lily variety, then this means that you have a flower that belongs to undersized Asian hybrids.

What else are undersized varieties:

  • Belem
  • Buzzer
  • Sorocaba
  • Spider
  • Curitiba
  • Ivory pixie
  • Joao Peso
  • Rio de Janeiro
  • Lady like
  • Matrix
  • Tinny chost

Terry varieties of lilies with photos and titles

Among Asian hybrids in recent years, many terry varieties of extraordinary beauty have been created. The most interesting thing is that in terms of care and winter hardiness, they are no different from their counterparts and can be grown in almost any region of Russia.

This delicate flower reaches a height of 110 cm in height, with a bud diameter of 15-18 cm. On average, about 8 flowers form on the stem, but under good conditions, up to 20 pieces can bloom. At the same time the width of the bush can reach half a meter.

Huge terry snow-white flowers adorn the average height of the stem (about 70-80 cm). It blooms in the first two summer months.

Thick red double flowers of this variety with a diameter of 15-18 cm look up. The plant reaches a height of 110 cm. It blooms in the first half of summer.

Fata Morgana

Looking at this lily, it seems that the golden sun has blossomed. It blooms in the second half of summer. Plant height - average - reaches 90-95 cm.

Double sensation

In addition to terry petals, this plant also affects the two-color coloring. Flowers of medium size appear around mid-summer.

Among the undersized varieties of Asian hybrids, a lily with double flowers appeared. This miracle barely grows to 45-50 cm, but it is very rich in bloom.

Mystery dream

Unique terry flower of light-green shade with dark specks in the center. Terry appears from the second year. The disclosure of the layers in the flower is slow, giving the opportunity every day to observe a new kind of flowers.

Black lilies, varieties

Mysterious black lilies are also present among the group of Asian hybrids. Of course, they all have not a pure black color, but only very dark shades of burgundy or purple, but still they can rightly be attributed to the group of black lilies.

This variety is currently considered the blackest of all existing: depending on the lighting, the color of the flower varies from maroon to gray-black.

Another one is so dark lily color that it can easily pass for black. Plants of medium height (1.3 m) can bloom in any of the summer months, depending on suitable conditions.

This almost black lily is not quite pure Asian, but rather a mixture of Asian and tubular hybrids, the so-called AT-hybrids.

Black Out

The name of the variety is already reminiscent of black color, although the flower itself is rather dark red with dark spots on the petals and a black center.

Corny lilies, varieties

Lilies from this group are ideally suited for growth in partial shade, for example, under trees. In direct sunlight, they will not live long. They also do not like frequent transplants, they are preferably transplanted once every 10 years. Otherwise, they belong to the most unpretentious varieties that easily hibernate in the open ground even in the north of Russia. Flowers can grow on a variety of soil types, almost not subject to fungal diseases.

They originate mainly from the lily Martagon or Kudrevata, mixed with other species. The flowers have a turbid shape, not too large, from 5 to 10 cm, the most diverse color. There is even a rare lavender color.

Unlike Asian hybrids, the lily varieties of this group are characterized by a light, unobtrusive fragrance.

The best varieties from this group are presented below.

  • Lankongensee
  • Claude schride
  • Maroon King
  • Arabian Knight
  • Gaybird
  • Russian morning
  • Martagon album
  • Sunny morning

White hybrids

Lilies from this section are often also called European hybrids, since they originate from natural species growing in Europe: Candida lily, chalcedony and others.

The varieties of lilies in this section are distinguished by their special agrotechnical care. Their bulbs are planted in a shallow depth, literally 3-5 cm. Their rest period is very short and falls in the summer, in August. That's when they need to be transplanted if necessary. And in September a rosette of leaves should appear in the form of shoots, from which only in spring a blooming shoot will grow.

These varieties are susceptible to fungal diseases and require mandatory shelter for the winter. It prefers to grow in the sun, in alkaline soil.

The plants are tall, up to 180-200 cm with large tubular or funnel-shaped flowers. Among the colors are mostly white and light colors. Flowers of this group have quite a strong and pleasant aroma.

There are not so many varieties (about 1% of the world assortment of all lilies):

  • Apollo
  • Testacium

American hybrids

The varieties of this group are named as they originate from North American lilies: Colombian, Leopard, Canadian and others. Despite its beauty, flowers are not very popular in their homeland.

American lilies have rather large flowers of bell-shaped or turbid forms, often bicolor, covered with numerous dots and strokes. Have a pleasant aroma, prefer penumbra, do not like frequent transplants. Usually bloom in July. Pretty whimsical care - in need of shelter for the winter.

The most interesting varieties are the following:

  • Lake Toular
  • Afterglow
  • Shaksan
  • Cherrywood

Long-flowered lilies

Very few varieties, derived from tropical lilies, so in Russia can be grown only in greenhouse conditions for cutting. The plants are not high - 100-120 cm. The flowers have the appearance of bells of various shades of white color elongated in a tubule with a pleasant aroma.

Among the best varieties:

  • White haven
  • White Elegance

Tubular and Orlean hybrids

This is the second most diverse group of lilies in the world after Asia. It has more than 1000 varieties. Yes, and in endurance, they are only slightly inferior to Asians, although they require sunny areas and weakly alkaline soils. Tubular hybrids are well opposed to various diseases. They are the most fragrant varieties of lilies. Details about the varieties of tubular lilies from the photo described in another article.

Oriental lily hybrids

Without exaggeration, Eastern hybrids can be called the most beautiful varieties of lilies, and you can appreciate this fact by looking at their photos with the names below. The plants are average in height, but they are distinguished by huge flowers, sometimes reaching up to 30-35 cm in diameter. They bloom later than all varieties, usually in August-September. Flowers are simple and terry, the most common shades of colors are pink, red, white. The shape of the flowers can be very diverse.

Attention! A distinctive feature of the eastern hybrids is the presence of either a fringing of another shade along the edge of the petals, or a strip in the center of each petal.

Here are just unpretentious they can not be called. Eastern hybrids can be affected by viral diseases, and they are very thermophilic. Under the conditions of the middle lane, they definitely need a reliable shelter for the winter, and even under such conditions their life may be short-lived. But among them there are low-growing flowers, which can be successfully grown in containers and stored in winter in non-freezing rooms. Examples include the following varieties:

  • Magni Kors
  • Garden party
  • Mona lisa
  • Entertainer

But many tall varieties of oriental lilies can be successfully grown in the middle lane, if you dig them in the fall for the winter.

  • Sturgeizer
  • Salmon star
  • Casablanca
  • Le roar
  • Crystal Star
  • Lovely girl
  • Barbados
  • Muscadet

And, finally, terry oriental lilies stand out for their fabulous beauty, the varieties of which are often shown in all their glory only in the third or fourth year after planting.

  • Broken heart
  • Miss lucy
  • Polar Star
  • Distant drum
  • Double Surprise
  • Soft Music
Important! The flowering of eastern hybrids, unlike Asian ones, can last about a month or even more.

Interspecific hybrids

Among interspecific hybrids, there are many varieties that have taken the best from parental forms and can be grown without fear even by gardeners from the northern regions.

LA hybrids

One of the most beautiful and at the same time unpretentious lilies that can winter in the open field, resistant to diseases and flowers that have a delicate fragrance. From the Asian hybrids, they took the stability and variety of shades, and from the long-flowered ones - the speed of development and refinement of wax-like large flowers. Bloom, as a rule, in June-July. Among the most popular varieties include:

  • Bestseller
  • Fangio
  • Samur
  • Indian Diamond
  • Keb Dazzle

These varieties turned out as a result of crossing the eastern and tubular hybrids and are distinguished by large sizes and stems and flowers. These are the most gigantic lilies among all those presently known in the world — they can reach 2.5 meters in height under favorable conditions. Some varieties of OT-hybrids are sometimes called lily-trees.

Tree lilies

Of course, calling these lilies trees is not entirely correct. After all, they do not have a woody trunk at all, and even in the southern regions they completely die off for the winter. Only a considerable height, usually not characteristic of flowers, can be related to trees. But even here one should not believe that in the conditions of the Urals and even the Moscow region these flowers will be able to reach a height of 2.5 meters, even under the best conditions of care. This can be possible only in the southern regions of the country, where, as a rule, photos of amazing wonder-lilies are taken.

But after all, the maximum height of 150-170 cm, which the RT-hybrids of lilies can reach in the middle lane, is also worthy of respect.

At the same time, they do not require special care and the winters endure well.

Comment! By the way, some varieties of tubular hybrids can also be called giant lilies.

Listed below are some of the most interesting varieties of OT-hybrids.

  • Debbie
  • Labrador
  • Manissa
  • Perple Prince
  • Sucinto
  • Empoli

Wild lily species

Among the species of lilies found in nature, many interesting representatives who can be successfully grown in the garden:

  • Kinky or Saranka,
  • Candidum
  • Daurskaya,
  • Regal,
  • Bulbonous
  • Tiger

Of particular interest in simplicity for gardeners are the last two species.

Tiger lilies: varieties, photos

Tiger lily or lanceolaceous, which is the ancestor of this group of flowers, is distinguished by a talm-shaped flower, and an orange color with many purple spots.

The most interesting representative of tiger lilies is the Fluffy Leopard variety - with terry flowers. Unpretentious and winter-hardy, on each stalk forms from 12 to 20 buds.

Another terry variety of tiger lilies, Flora Pleno, is also interesting and popular.

There are varieties of other colors, but with the same spotty pattern.

  • Yellow Shade - Citronella
  • Pink shades

Bulbous lilies

Bulbous or onion-bearing lily has a tiger-like color, but the flower has a different shape - tubular.

Comment! Много бульбочек образуется также и у тигровых лилий.

Blue lilies

But the breeders of blue color, breeders, despite all their efforts, have not yet brought. And numerous attractive pictures that interest frankly unscrupulous sellers of unaware buyers are nothing more than well-designed images in one of the graphics programs. However, Japanese breeders promise to bring blue lilies by 2020.

Of course, no article can show all the richness and variety of species and varieties of lilies. But, perhaps, after reading this article, it will be easier to navigate in choosing the right variety for your specific conditions.
